“When is alt season 2025?” Now hold that thought and I’ll give you my predictions for the new year! Now FLOKI, BONK, XRP, PEPE, PNUT, and Hamster Kombat token have all witnessed 50% to over 200% gains within the first two weeks in November 2024. And you’re probably wondering, is this the alt season people have been talking about? The answer is no because these are still minor gains compared to the 5000% to over 200000% price surges some crypto assets would yield in the coming months. These x5 and x20 profits can be accumulated right from spot trading not even futures.
Also, alt season has not yet begun given that almost 90% of cryptos are still at their previous lows and yet to breach key levels on higher timeframes such as the daily and weekly. I’ll be providing a list of these undersold altcoins while also revealing which crypto will explode in 2025. I’ve already provided a concise guide on the five best cryptos to buy now and how to earn passive income with cryptocurrency.
On the other hand, what is alt season? What happens to Bitcoin during alt season? and how long does alt season last? These are some questions I’ll answer in this guide. Therefore, if you’ve been looking forward to price surges after Bitcoin’s halving in early 2024, then I’ve got you covered!
What are Alts?
Alternative coins (altcoins or alts) are cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin. This means Ethereum (ETH), Binance coin (BNB), Solana (SOL), and even memes such as Dogecoin (Doge), Floki Inu (Floki) etc. are altcoins. Just think of any coin that is not Bitcoin as an alternative coin.
Bull Market Vs. Alt Season
Just like we have winter, summer, autumn, and spring, the crypto market has seasons bull and bear seasons. In summer, you’d expect blumming trees and flowers correct? Same way you’d expect drying and fallen leaves in the autumn. Therefore, think of the bull season as summer and alt season as blumming trees in summer. Here, summer can be likened to the bull market where cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin rally significantly.
Why Do Altcoins Have Their Own Season?
Why do alternative currencies have their season? You may wonder. Why don’t they just rally alongside Bitcoin?
Now some alts like meme which have a strong correlation with Bitcoin spike with the top cryptocurrency by market cap. For instance, between the first week and second week of November 2024, Bitcoin surged by 33% (from $69,000 to $92,000). This price surge is shown in Figure 1.
Similarly, meme coins such as FLOKI and BONK spiked by 182%. The spikes in both assets is depicted in Figure 2.
However, the spikes in FLOKI and BONK only indicate that we may witness an alt season soon or were in its onset. Do you understand?
What Exactly is Alt Season
Alt season is where majority of cryptocurrencies in the market, excluding Bitcoin, witness significant gains. Bitcoin tends to consolidate or pullback during this season. The pullback is as a result of money flowing from Bitcoin into alts. This means that some people close their Bitcoin positions and buy alts. As more money flows into alts, it causes significant price surges for an extended period of time. Also, as alt season hits a peak, money flows back into Bitcoin, hence, most altcoins may tend to consolidate as Bitcoin resumes its upward trend.
Now that you understand the concept of alt season and the rotational flow of capital from Bitcoin into more volatile assets, let’s predict 2025’s alt season.
How to Predict Alt Season 2025
Certain metrics can be used to predict the altcoin season in 2025. These metrics include:
- Bitcoin’s dominance
- ETHBTC’s Price Performance
- Bitcoin’s Historical Performance
Let’s take a quick look at each.
1. Bitcoin’s Dominance (BTC.D)
The Bitcoin Dominance (BTC.D) shows Bitcoin’s market share in the overall crypto market. A higher dominance indicates that more of the market cap is in Bitcoin than alts. Most traders prefer to buy Bitcoin than alts during this period. As such, when Bitcoin’s dominance hits a peak and consolidates or retraces, there is usually more preference for altcoins leading to an alt season.
In 2020’s bull market, a peak was hit around third week of December just a week before alt season began. This price peak is represented in Figure 3.
Currently, Bitcoin’s dominance is around 60.11% and approaching a resistance level of 63%, as shown in Figure 4. When this key level is hit, we can expect more altcoins to surge significantly. There is a resistance zone around 65% to 66% created by a falling gap. This gap will act as a strong zone for the dominance, hence, expect Bitcoin to go sideways or retrace when that happens. You might want to check this guide on how to trade supply and demand zones in crypto.
2. ETH/BTC’s Price Performance
ETH/BTC pair denotes Ethereum’s strength compared to Bitcoin’s. The expectation is for Ethereum to show more strength or move independently of Bitcoin during alt season.
Therefore, for alt season to begin, the ETHBTC chart needs to find a bottom and then retrace from these lows. In 2020, Alt season began around late December after ETH/BTC bottomed and began to outperform Bitcoin as shown in Figure 5. There was another rally from third week of March 2021 into first week of March 2021.
Using 2020’s chart as a guide, we can also forecast that the 2025’s alt season will begin around late December 2024. As shown in Figure 6, ETHBTC is approaching a key demand zone. It can be expected that when BTC.D hits a resistance, ETHBTC will hit this demand zone.
Note how the first support level would be an early start of the season. The second support line coincides with 2020’s support level that was retested before the altseason began. These two levels create a strong support zone for ETHBTC as shown in Figure 7.
Bitcoin’s Historical Performance
Bitcoin’s historical performance during previous bull markets can help you predict when the next alt season will be. The last bull market was from November 2020. Based on the Figure 8, Bitcoin spiked from November 2020 into the third week of December before consolidating.
ETHBTC, on the other hand, leaped around the third week of December while Bitcoin was ranging.
Based on this timeframe, we can expect 2025’s alt season to begin around the second to third week of December 2024. The alt season may be earlier this year since there is higher adoption of crypto compared to 2020. Also, US President Donald Trump and Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk have shown some level of support for the crypto space. Thus, the support of these prominent people could cause price surges in the altcoin market in early December.
Now the next question you should ask is, when will the altcoin season end? I’ll get to that shortly.
Notice on the ETH/BTC chart how the price surge slowed down after third week of January. Here there was a temporary correction into March 2021 as money flowed into Bitcoin. Thus, the bull market was still ongoing even though some alts began to correct. Bitcoin, on the other hand, hit new price levels.
Let’s look at an altcoin chart such as DOGE/USDT between December 2020 and March 2020 to see if there is any correlation with the ETHBTC chart.
DOGEUSDT
The DOGEUSDT chart from the weekly timeframe shows that DOGE also experienced significant price gains from the third week of December. Interestingly, DOGE began to see some gains (from first week on November 2020) even before alt season began (in late December 2020) but not significantly. This is shown in Figure 9.
As is currently the case in November 2024, DOGE has spiked by 400% depicted in Figure 10. Therefore, we can expect more leaps from DOGE when alt season begins. Take this as a hint, DOGE is one of the cryptos that will explode in 2025.
But unlike ETHBTC, which corrected around late Janaury into March, DOGE still surged. This behaviour can be expected from most alts as they keep surging even when the ETHBTC chart has indicated a temporary correction or stalling in the alt season.
But should you ignore the price forecast correction of the ETHBTC chart? You shouldnt! It means that a good number of alts will correct around this time and some will also keep rallying with Bitcoin due to euphoria.
How Long Will ALT Season Last
Alt season began in 2020 around December of the same year into September 2022. However, the alt season was punctuated by periods of corrections and consolidations.
Based on the past performance of the cryptocurrency market in 2020, the alt season in 2025 will last for almost two years with months of pullbacks.
Interestingly, we’re still in a downtrend since the last alt season as shown in Figure 11. A breakout of this downtrend would see even more alts rally. Imagine what that would look like given that ETH/BTC is yet to bottom and most alts have picked up.
On the other hand, two years is a long one to amass as much money as possible trading crypto. But it’s worth noting that there will be retraces even during the alt season. ETH/BTC in 2020 experienced pullbacks from late January 2021 to second week of March 2021. Price also corrected around May of the same year . Thus, we can expect a pattern of two months of rally, and one month of pullback back.
Top Undersold Altcoins to Buy Now
Newbies and entry level crypto enthusiasts would most likely be interested on the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. Specifically, these are the top cryptos below $1. That’s why you should pay close attention to these alts especially if they’re very cheap. The big idea is that these coins could potentially surge to $10 if not more. So it makes a lot of sense to buy them while they’re under $0 and on the front page of Coinmarketcap.
Apart from BONK and DOGE, here are other top cryptos that are still very cheap to buy today.
Shiba
Shiba Inu (SHIB). Current price $0.000024. You could look to take profit around $0.000087 and that would be 260% price surge as shown in Figure 12.
Out of the top 10 cryptos by market cap, excluding Tether(USDT), Shiba is the cheapest with a lot of zeros to cancel out. This price looks attractive to new traders into the market especially those with small portfolios looking to grow it fast. Therefore, you can expect Shiba to see significant gains from December 2024.
Gala (GALA)
Gala may not be among the top 10 cryptos by market cap, but historically, it’s shown to have strong volatility. Therefore, if you want a cheap crypto to buy now for alt season, buy GALA. Interestingly, GALA can give even more profit than SHIB. Figure 13 shows GALA IS currently at its lows and can yield about 766% profit in the short term and around 1900% in the long run. Still looking for a coin that can do x10 even x20? Then try GALA.
Conclusion
You now know when the 2025 alt season will be and how to predict it. Take a look at the BTC.D and ETH/BTC charts closely to get signals that will enable you forecast similar performances in the near future. Be wary that altcoins won’t perform exactly the same way, however, having insight into what they can possibly do will prepare you better to reap those profits. Remember to diversify your portfolio as you prepare for the next bull cycle in 2025.
